Cady Day of Service Blood Drives

DES MOINES, Iowa (October 17, 2023) – LifeServe Blood Center, the Iowa Court of Appeals, the Iowa State Bar Association and Drake Law School have partnered to support the fourth annual Mark S. Cady Day of Public Service on October 20th. The Cady Day of Service is dedicated to the late Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cady with the intent to bring the Iowa legal community together to honor and to celebrate the life and legacy of Justice Cady and his commitment to public service, access to justice, and civil rights.
Hundreds of volunteers throughout Iowa and beyond have helped make Cady Day of Service a huge success. Projects and events held as part of Cady Day have impacted well over 10,000 individuals through community service, legal clinics, and educational programming.
As part of this special day, the Iowa State Bar Association with the Iowa Court of Appeals and Drake University Law School are hosting Cady Day of Service Blood Drives. Molly Rawls, Executive Assistant for Chief Justice Bowers shared the impact that these blood drives could have on members of our community. Telling her own story, Rawls shares, “I had two aortic aneurysms burst unexpectedly and required a lot of blood. I received 28 units of blood and 50 units of blood product over two days and three surgeries. Donors saved my life”. Rawls has continued to be an advocate for blood donation and is proud for this opportunity to partner Cady’s legacy with a cause that has personally impacted herself and her loved ones.
This year, Rawls and colleagues are hoping to break previous blood drive records. In 2022, the Court of Appeals registered 54 donors collecting 42 products with 27 first time donors, and Drake Law School registered 35 donors with 30 products collected and 11 first time donors.
