Less than 10 percent of the population have the O Negative blood type. O- blood can be used to treat patients of any blood type, including in trauma situations where a patient’s blood type is not yet known. That’s what makes these lifesaving donors extra special, and thus makes this particular blood type in high demand – and often leads to local shortages of O- blood all year long.

So we want O- donors to join our brand new Universal Donor Society program in 2026! The more times you contribute to the local blood supply, the more perks you’ll get as we recognize and honor your commitment to saving local lives with your generous gift of life.

FAQ universal donor society

• How do I join the Universal Donor Society?

  It’s simple! Just donate O- blood at any donor center or mobile drive. All O- donors who donate successfully will be automatically opted into the club after their second donation in 2026. Rewards will be tracked automatically on our end, and we will reach out to you to redeem your rewards.

• What happens if I start donating late in 2026?

  The UDS program runs all year long, so if you can’t make an appointment in January, you still have time to earn your t-shirt and subsequent rewards all year long.

• When do I get my rewards?

  You will be sent a form to fill out as you reach each level of the UDS (2 donations, 3 donations, 4 donations, 6 donations). Expect delivery of rewards in about a month.

• What happens if I get deferred and can’t give?

  In order to qualify for UDS rewards, you must have a successful donation. We encourage you to keep trying if you are unable to donate at your appointment.

NOTE: Double Red Cell O- donors are also eligible for UDS. The same rules and rewards apply.
