Michael Kafka, MD
Since 1983, Dr. Kafka has shared a wealth of trusted expertise with healthcare practitioners across LifeServe Blood Center’s service region. A board-certified physician in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology, Dr. Kafka serves as LifeServe Blood Center’s Medical Director and primarily oversees laboratory operations, donor safety and transfusion medicine software programs.
In addition to sharing his expertise with LifeServe Blood Center, Dr. Kafka serves as the Medical Director of Quality and Safety for UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s in Sioux City, chairs the UnityPoint Health system Lab/Pathology Clinical Service group, is co-owner of Siouxland Cytology Consultants and is an instructor for the Medical Technology Program at St. Luke’s College – UnityPoint Health in Sioux City.
Dr. Kafka graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1977 where he also completed his residency and fellowship in pathology. Dr. Kafka’s professional and research interests include transfusion medicine and blood banking, patient blood management, quality and safety management, operations research, Lean-Six Sigma, predictive analytics, molecular pathology, and system computer simulation/modeling.
Alex Smith, DO
Dr. K. Alex Smith joined LifeServe Blood Center as Medical Director in July 2015. He oversees all aspects of blood donation and product testing. He additionally manages the Therapeutic Apheresis service. Dr. Smith also provides consultation to local providers and blood banks on transfusion and apheresis-related issues.
Dr. Smith served in the United States Navy before receiving his B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis. He completed medical school at A. T. Still University and a Clinical Pathology residency at Summa Health System/NEOMED. His fellowship was in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine at the University of Iowa. He is currently board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine.
Dr. Smith currently serves on multiple transfusion committees and has previously served on the AABB’s Membership Committee. He has given many presentations on a variety of topics to healthcare groups. As an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine he lectures on transfusion medicine. He additionally participates as a patient-advocate with the Iowa Medical Society’s Physician Day on the Hill.
