Alex Smith, DO
Dr. K. Alex Smith has been LifeServe Blood Center’s Medical Director since 2015.
Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Smith served four years in the United States Navy. He then completed a B.A. in Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis, medical school at A.T. Still University, a Clinical Pathology residency at Summa Health System/NEOMED in Akron, Ohio, and a Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine fellowship at the University of Iowa. He is currently board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine.
Dr. Smith oversees all aspects of blood donation, product testing, therapeutic apheresis, and cellular therapy. He also provides consultation to providers and blood banks on transfusions, transfusion safety, lab-related issues, and apheresis.
Dr. Smith currently serves on multiple transfusion committees and has previously served on the AABB’s Membership Committee. He has given many presentations on a variety of topics, including transfusion guidelines, transfusion reactions, and platelet refractoriness. As an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine, he lectures on transfusion medicine.
When not spending time with his family, Dr. Smith enjoys community service and advocacy work. He currently serves on the Iowa Medical Society’s Committee on Legislation, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Iowa’s Advocacy Committee, Clive Planning & Zoning Committee, and with the Clive Chamber of Commerce.
