White House Encourages Convalescent Plasma Donations

This week President Donald Trump, along with medical professionals and industry leaders, urged Americans who have been ill with COVID-19 to donate convalescent plasma.

Convalescent plasma is the liquid part of blood that is collected from individuals who have recently recovered from COVID-19.  COVID-19 patients develop antibodies in their plasma that attack the virus.  Convalescent plasma is being used as an experimental treatment for patients currently battling COVID-19.

“If you’ve had the virus, if you donate, it would be a terrific thing,” Trump said. “We really need donations of the plasma. To those that have had the virus, you’ve gotten through it. And I guess that means you have something very special there.”
