Winter Weather Impacts Blood Supply
LifeServe Blood Center, the sole supplier of blood products to more than 120 hospitals in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, urgently needs donors to give blood to immediately increase the local blood supply. Due to recent winter weather, several blood drives were cancelled this week and the blood supply has dipped to a critically low level. Currently, there is less than a two day supply of more than half of the blood types.
“We normally have a 3-5 day supply of all blood types on our shelves,” said Stacy Sime, Chief Executive Officer for LifeServe Blood Center. “Our blood supply has dwindled to less than a two-day supply following the recent winter weather. Unfortunately, we’ve cancelled many blood drives and donor appointments but the demand for blood products continues at a steady pace and we need to immediately increase our supply.”
Donors are urged to schedule appointments or walk-in to donate. Appointments can be made online at www.lifeservebloodcenter.org or by calling 800.287.4903. Visit www.lifeservebloodcenter.org to find upcoming blood drives in your area.
