Las Vegas Shooting and the Need for Blood
DES MOINES, Iowa (October 2, 2017) – In the wake of the horrific mass shooting in Las Vegas late Sunday night, LifeServe Blood Center is reminding the public that it’s the blood already on the shelf that helps victims in the case of attacks, tragedies and other catastrophes.
Don’t wait for a tragedy! It takes time for a unit of donated blood to be prepared for transfusion. Each donation must be screened, processed and transported to a hospital before it’s ready for patients. In order to be prepared for events like the Las Vegas shooting, hospitals need a stable blood supply at all times, not after the fact.
LifeServe Blood Center is the sole provider of blood and blood products to more than 120 hospitals in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota. Once our hospital partners’ needs are fulfilled, we are able to assist other blood centers should they require assistance. United Blood Services in Nevada has reached out to the Las Vegas community for blood donations. LifeServe is standing by ready to assist if needed.
LifeServe encourages donors to make an appointment as soon as they can and keep their appointment so they can ensure the local supply is at a safe level and help the Las Vegas blood center if called upon. Your donation is needed today for those in local hospitals: cancer patients, transplant recipients, premature babies, trauma victims, and those undergoing routine surgeries.
